Did you hear? Yet another national retailer is facing some rough times and this may mean closures for Maine locations.

According to Maine Biz, West Marine, the boating and fishing supply chain that's been a go-to spot for everything from life jackets to marine electronics, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as part of a major restructuring effort.

The company says it plans to stay open while it reorganizes, but stores that aren't performing well across the country could be on the chopping block.

Are Maine's West Marine Stores Closing?

For Maine boaters and anglers, that's bringing up a big question: what happens to the state's West Marine stores?

While the company hasn't released a finalized list of closures, reports indicate that store shutdowns are expected as part of the bankruptcy process.

West Marine currently operates roughly 200 stores nationwide and is looking to reduce debt while restructuring its business.

The filing has taken place after years of challenges, including changing consumer spending habits, inflation, supply chain issues, and a slowdown in outdoor recreation spending after the pandemic boom.

For so many boat owners, West Marine has long been the place you run to when you need a part immediately before heading out on the water.

For now, it's a waiting game.

Stores remain open, but Maine customers may want to keep an eye on developments as the bankruptcy case moves forward.
