Meet the Maine Brothers Behind the New Indie Movie ‘Saving Black Bear’
Okay, I love a good Maine story, but this one is especially fun.
Brothers Nick and Cash Cassidy are proving you don’t necessarily need Hollywood, a giant studio or a million-dollar budget to make a movie people actually want to see.
The South Portland/Cape Elizabeth bros created their latest indie film, Saving Black Bear, and they’re bringing it straight to Maine audiences.
Meet the Maine Brothers Behind the Movie

The movie was filmed entirely in Maine, with Black Bear Cinemas in Orono serving as the primary location.
And the story? It’s about a group of misfit movie-theater employees who band together to save the theater they love when it’s threatened with closure.
Basically, a movie about saving a movie theater… filmed inside a real Maine movie theater. Perfectly Maine.

Xander Berkley is a well-known actor who also is in this movie. You may have seen him in Terminator 2, Judgment Day, Walking Dead and so many more!
And here’s the part I really love: Nick and Cash got the idea after bringing their first movie, Childish Things, to Maine for screenings. One of those screenings sold out, and that experience helped inspire them to keep making films and bringing them directly to local audiences.
Saving Black Bear premiered in Orono earlier this month, and the brothers are continuing their Maine screening run.
You can catch it at the Nickelodeon in Portland on Monday, September 21 at 7:00 p.m., with another screening planned in Orono on September 30th.
