Make-A-Wish Kid From Maine Meets His Hero In Pittsburgh
10-year-old Riley Wheaton got the trip of a lifetime to fly to PNC Park in Pittsburgh to meet his hero, pitcher Paul Skenes, all thanks to the generous donations made to Make-A-Wish Maine.
Riley's Wish
Riley is a big baseball fan, and meeting Paul Skenes was a dream come true, especially after what he has been through.
According to CBS News Pittsburgh, Riley was flown to Boston Children's Hospital, where he was found to be in complete heart failure with a diagnosis of myocarditis. He had to have five chest tubes to remove the fluid from around his heart and lungs.
A few months later, he was diagnosed with a cancer that forms in the lining of blood vessels. He had many rounds of chemotherapy, but all that time he was in the hospital, he was still watching baseball like and super fan he is.
First Pitch
He also got the grand tour, hanging out with his hero and learning a little about how things are done in the majors.
Skenes was interviewed after his time with Riley, and you could tell he was glad we could be a part of this.
Normally, I'd question a kid from Maine who is a fan of the Pirates instead of the Red Sox, but not this time.
Congratulations, Riley, on an awesome first pitch and you're amazing battle that you fought to get to where you are now. Good health wishes to you from here on out.
A big thanks to all who donate to Make-A-Wish Maine to make these wishes come true. If you'd like to donate, visit wish.org/maine.
