Want to Fall Back in Love With Portland Maine? Do This
I fall in love with Portland every time I do this.
I was going to say that it's an easy thing to do, but that all depends. It's exercise, so only you know your own level. It's walking Back Cove. If you are feeling frustrated with Maine's largest city, take an hour and briskly walk the 3 1/2-mile Back Cove Trail.
I get it. Portland has had some growing pains. There's a lot of nostalgic thinking about the Portland of 30 years ago. But that Portland is no longer. Sometimes it can be scary what Portland is becoming. Driving around the city you see million-dollar condos being built and drive a little further to look at a homeless encampment with tent upon tent upon tent. I don't ever remember a time in Portland with such a big split between the haves and the have-nots. I know the distinction has always existed, but it just seems so much more in your face.
That's when a walk around the city's big loop is just what the doctor ordered. You can listen to the birds, watch the construction on Portland's mini 'big dig', and get the best view of one of the best cities around. Listen, if I have to exercise (and according to my doctor I have to exercise) I'm always gonna use Back Cove as my fitness center. My treat at the end of huffing and puffing is to sit on one of the many benches provided and just enjoy the view.
Every city has its problems, but at least we get to battle ours in the most amazing setting. I can't wait for the street to open back up. What a treat that will be!
