When I think of eating seaweed the only acceptable thing that comes to mind is the thin sheets that hold the rice together when I'm eating sushi.

I never would think twice about eating it any other way, but I guess that's just me. And a few hundred other people. Well, if you're like me, you probably want to learn more about eating seaweed.

I googled the health benefits and I was shocked at how good this soggy plant is for you! Turns out seaweed has a ton of vitamins and minerals as well as antioxidants, it can help with your overall gut health because it's loaded with fiber and some other things that I can't pronounce and they say it could help you lose weight!

As luck would have it, there's a class on cooking seaweed coming up with Micha Woodcock the owner/operator of  Atlantic Holdfast Seaweed Company, who hand harvests sea vegetables from the Gulf of Maine, based on a small island in outer Penobscot Bay.

Micha will show us the culinary possibilities of Maine’s native edible seaweeds. We'll even get to try a few different dishes and learn how to easily add seaweed to dishes.  Micah will also talk about the features and benefits of different seaweeds, how he harvests them, and their culinary and ecological importance.

The class is this Thursday at Heritage Seaweed on India Street in Portland from 7 to 8:30pm. Tickets are $15, grab them here.
