Whatever Happened to Smitty’s Cinema in Biddeford?

Smitty's Cinemas is a chain of movie theaters in Maine and New Hampshire that also serve lunch and dinner while you watch your movie. Many also have arcades, and a few have party rooms for birthdays and other celebrations. But what, somewhere along the way, we lost one. Whatever happened to Smitty's Cinema in Biddeford?

When Smitty's Cinema came to Maine and New Hampshire, they filled a void from other movie theater chains that had shut down. With locations in Topsham, Windham, Sanford, and Biddeford, Maine, as well as Tilton, New Hampshire. Those theaters are all still up and running today, and the Windham one is our choice for dinner and a movie. But the Biddeford location is no more.

Whatever Happened to Smitty's Cinema in Biddeford?

According to Saco Bay News, Smitty's Cinema in Biddeford closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, like many movie theaters and public spaces.  It was located at Five Point Shopping Center, but was closed permanently in May of 2020 when the owners of the theaters decided not to reopen it.

A post on the former Smitty's Biddeford Facebook page delivered the news.

We regret to say that due to the unprecedented damages this pandemic has inflicted upon our Biddeford location, Smitty’s Cinema in Biddeford will not be reopening.

And that was the end of Smitty's Cineman in Biddeford.

Smitty's Biddeford Location Today

Five Points Shopping Center has made some changes recently, and the new tenants in Smitty's former space have turned it into an indoor sports center, with six pickleball courts, three golf simulator bays, and a multi-game wall designed for all ages. It's appropriately called "Bounce Pickle + Play"

Smitty's Cinemas aren't gone completely, though. They still have their locations in Topsham, Windham, Sanford, and Tillton, New Hamspire.
