I Finally Ate at One of Maine’s Most Famous Diners

This tiny diner off the beaten path in Biddeford, Maine, is one of the best.

There has been so much written about the Palace Diner for so many reasons! A big reason is that the dining car is a rare train car with very limited seating of 15 at the counter.

Is the Palace Diner in Biddeford, Maine, really in a train car?

The Palace Diner was built in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1927 by the Pollard Company. It has been in Biddeford, Maine for its entire life and is one of two Pollard cars remaining in America. Greg Mitchell and Chad Conley reopened the diner in March of 2014 and are its sixth owners. They did some major renovations to the building in 2021 to keep it going for generations to come.

It's not a huge menu at the Palace Diner, with limited hours of 7 am to 2 pm. But if breakfast is your jam, they serve it all day. I was here for lunch and had stuck in my head the cheeseburger. I had heard good things. But then - the fried chicken sandwich caught my eye! It is obviously huge with a big fried chicken hunk, cabbage slaw, jalapeños, and mayo, on a sesame bun with a hung of iceberg wedge for a salad! I laughed so hard when it came and then made the couple seated to my left promise not to video my attempt to eat it.

My lunch buddy had a tuna melt. We both only ate half our sandwich as we munched on delicious fries and caught up with each other. We both really enjoyed our food, but then did say that the next time it's the cheeseburger for us both!

I'm so glad I finally made it to the Palace Diner, and it won't be my last time! Oh and remember, this is a cash only place. Guess who forgot that?
