When we first introduced you to Mainer, Nicholas Jacques, in our Dobsonfly article, everyone was instantly captivated, not just by the massive prehistoric-looking bug, but mostly by the guy brave enough to let it crawl all over his face.

Yup. Nicholas is a photographer who takes photos of insects sitting on his face.

Take this photo, for instance, it will instantly jog your memory.

So it turns out that Nicholas’s story goes even deeper. He is a photographer and once an arachnophobe himself. But he has now turned that fear into a fascinating project.

Mainer Nicholas Jacques Turns Bug Fears into Face-Crawling Photo Art

He says,
I used to be an arachnophobe until I started my insect photography. Since I have become an advocate for people not to kill them for simply existing. My face pictures were a way to grab people's attention and to show how they aren't just monsters out to get us.

Now he’s taking pictures, wearing bugs. You can see the full collection over on Taterful Photography.

These iconic photos of all sizes of insects just calmly chilling on his cheeks or nose are part shock and part education.

Nicholas has grown up in Maine and, like all of us, has lived alongside these bugs. Now, he’s using his creativity and platform to encourage other people to also let go of their fears and embrace them instead, saying:

Having grown up in rural Maine, I have lived alongside these wonderful critters my whole life. I understand the fear people have for them because I felt it too at one point.

So, whether it’s a massive dobsonfly with jaws for days sitting on his face or a gorgeous green garden spider, Nicholas wants you to take a second to get curious about nature and maybe even learn a little bit.

One pic at a time, he’s helping all of us embrace Maine’s wildlife.

The beauty isn’t always cute; sometimes the ugliest critters are the most fascinating to explore.
