Opinion: Why an Outdoor Music Venue Could Be a Game-Changer for Lewiston, Maine

As someone who live in Lewiston, I have to admit.. I like this idea.

The proposal to bring national concerts to Simard-Payne Memorial Park, according to News Center Maine and it has me genuinely excited. More live music? More people discovering our city? More money flowing into local restaurants, breweries, hotels, and small businesses?

Those all sound like wins to me. 

And honestly, I think Lewiston deserves some good news. 

Here's Why A Brand New Music Venue Would Thrive in Lewiston, Maine

Over the past few years, our community has carried more than its fair share of heartbreak. We've been defined by tragedy far too often, when the reality is there's so much more to this city than the headlines people see on the news. 

I want people from across Maine and beyond to have a reason to spend a Saturday in Lewiston. To grab dinner downtown, walk along the river, discover local shops, and realize this city has so much to offer. 

Could an outdoor concert venue help change that perception? I think it could. 

That said...at the same time, I'm also cautiously optimistic. 

We've all heard exciting announcements before that never quite made it across the finish line.

This project still has years of planning, negotiations, approvals, and construction ahead of it. The goal is to host concerts by 2028, but that's still a long way off. 

There are also legitimate questions that need answers.

How will traffic be managed? What about parking?

Will nearby neighbors be okay with the added noise? Can the city balance major concerts while preserving the park for the community events people already love, like the L/A Balloon Festival and Dempsey Challenge? 

Those concerns are real, and they deserve thoughtful answers.

But if those challenges can be addressed, I think this could be transformational. 

Thompson's Point has shown what live music can do for an area, not just economically, but culturally. It creates memories. It gives people a reason to gather. It makes a city feel alive.
