5 Reasons Why Maine’s Drive-In Movie Theaters Are the Ultimate Throwback
From the 50s through the 80s, drive-in movie theaters were in just about every town in Maine. Then the VCR was invented, and they slowly disappeared one by one. At one time, there were 49 drive-in movie theaters in Maine. Today, there are only four left.
What makes a drive-in movie theater so special? Here are 5 reasons why Maine drive-in movie theaters are the ultimate throwback.
1. You Watch the Movie in Your Car
You get your own private seating just by finding a spot to park in front of the big screen. I saw Star Wars for the first time in 1977 at the Norway Drive-In, sitting there in awe at what I was watching with a giant grocery bag full of popcorn.
2. Great Food
Unlike indoor movie theaters, drive-ins typically have a greater selection of food. Instead of just candy, popcorn and soda, you can have a slice of pizza or even the whole pie. Hamburgers, french fries, and ice cream too.
3. You Get To Watch Two Movies
Most drive-in theaters show two movies, not just one. In the case of the Bridgton Twin Drive-In, they offer four movies, showing two on each screen. Just pick the two movies you want to watch and park.
4. Bring Your Pets
In some cases, drive-in theaters allow you to bring pets in your car. That makes you not have to worry when Fido has to pee when being left home alone for over four hours.

5. Bring Your Own Food and Drink.
In most cases, drive-in movie theaters allow you to bring in your own food, drinks, and snacks. Try walking into an indoor theater with your arms full of soda, popcorn, and candy.
