As we get closer to the holiday season, I always find this a great time of year to reflect on "community" and those who may have a tougher time with securing life's basics.

One of the organizations that has a front row seat to the struggles of those in our community is the Kennebec Valley Community Action Program, or KVCAP, as many know them.

Currently KVCAP has kicked off it's annual diaper drive and is hosting several "Stuff The Cruiser" events where they team up with local law enforcement offices to collect diapers for families that may be having a difficult time purchasing diapers for their families.

According to some of the statistics provided by the Center for Economic and Policy Research, disposable diapers are something that one in three families struggle to provide. Also, most government assistance programs do not classify diapers as basic needs, and instead group them with cigarettes, alcohol and pet foods, which places them on the disallowed list for purchase by supplemental programs like food stamps.

As any parent can attest, diapers are in fact a need for anyone with a baby. So, if you are able to come out and offer your support for this vital "Stuff The Cruiser" event, please do!

Look for local law enforcement departments to be on-site, with a "cruiser" to stuff with diapers at:

The Augusta Hannaford, at 29 Whitten Road, on Wednesday, Oct. 27th from noon to 3pm

The Skowhegan Hannaford, at 100 Fairgrounds Marketplace, on Friday Oct. 29th from 3-6pm

Again, this great event helps so many families in Kennebec and Somerset Counties. You can learn more about the programs at KVCAP by CLICKING HERE.
