The Oxford Walmart was built in 1994 on land the company bought. I remember it well, happening shortly after the loss of both Ames and Woolworth's, two of the Oxford Hills' go-to places to shop. People were excited about the new store. This is what it looked like in 2012.

In a surprising twist of commercial development and deep history, the Walmart Supercenter in Oxford, Maine, stands on land that has drawn the interest of archaeologists due to its ancient past.

According to historical reporting, when the store was constructed, the site was identified as part of an important archaeological area with evidence of human presence dating back roughly 9,000 years, placing it in the Early Holocene period of North American prehistory.

Artefacts in this region include stone tools and other remnants of early Indigenous occupation, offering rare glimpses into the lives of Paleoindian and Archaic-era peoples who lived long before European settlement. Finds of similar age across Maine help frame how the first peoples adapted to post-glacial environments, hunted game, and camped along waterways.

Although detailed formal archaeological reports on this specific land are scarce in the public record, the Spokesman-Review and other historical sources explicitly note that Wal-Mart’s footprint covers land identified as archaeologically significant during development of the store in the 1990s.

The story is a complex balance between modern land use and preservation of the deep past. In many parts of New England, construction projects have uncovered buried traces of ancient camps, seasonal settlements, and stone tool workshops — reminders that beneath parking lots and big-box stores lie landscapes that once sustained life thousands of years ago.

Some protesters hoped Walmart could do something about the location in Oxford to help keep this ancient history in place, but nothing was done.
