The disappearance of Kimberly Ann Moreau in 1986 is one of those stories that lingers in the memory of anyone who’s lived in or even driven through small-town Maine. It’s a case that shouldn’t have faded into obscurity, but somehow did, and yet, for nearly four decades, it hasn’t been forgotten by the people who knew her and the family that refuses to give up.

I remember the news reports back in 1986 of Kimberly Moreau missing, and just kept thinking to myself, "How can this happen?" She was just 3 years older than I was at the time. This missing persons case really hit the people of Maine hard.

According to Missing People in America, Kimberly was just 17 years old when she vanished from her hometown of Jay, Maine, the night of May 10, 1986. She’d skipped her junior prom after an argument with her boyfriend and instead went out with a friend. That night, the two young women met up with two men in their mid-20s, one of whom was named Brian Enman. At some point, Kimberly got into a late-model white Pontiac Trans Am.

Shortly before midnight, she stopped at home and told her sister she’d be back in an hour. She left without her purse, makeup, or personal belongings, a fact that still baffles people familiar with the case.

According to Enman, he dropped her off around 3:45 a.m. on Jewell Street, about half a mile from her house, saying she wanted to walk the rest of the way alone. That was the last confirmed sighting of Kimberly. Foul play is widely suspected, but no one has ever been charged with it.

Over the years, police have followed tips and conducted numerous searches, including on properties linked to people known to have been with her that night, and areas along the Androscoggin River, all without finding Kimberly or her remains.

According to the Sun Journal, rumors go around from time to time, like when remains were uncovered in a bog in early 2025, only for Maine State Police to confirm they were not connected to Kimberly’s disappearance.

Her father, Richard Moreau, has become the face of a relentless search for answers. He’s put up posters, offered rewards, and kept the memory of his daughter alive in a way that’s both heartbreaking and heroic. He’s said plainly that all he wants is to bring Kimberly home and finally have some closure, something her family has been denied for generations.

Kimberly Moreau’s case remains one of Maine’s most haunting cold cases and is a stark reminder of how a single night can reshape countless lives, and how unanswered questions can endure far longer than the moment itself.
