Adorable Homing Pigeon Finds New Maine Home and Refuses to Leave

Apparently, Maine has homing pigeons, and one has decided to move in.

I didn’t have “learning about homing pigeons from my mother-in-law” on my bingo card, but here we are.

My in-laws, Don and Joanne spotted a pure white pigeon with identification bands hanging around their property in Mechanic Falls. I call them bracelets, but whatever.

Anyway, they quickly realized it wasn’t an ordinary pigeon, it was a homing pigeon that clearly wasn’t home.

Maine Homing Pigeon Refuses to Return Home

Unsure what to do, they called animal organizations before eventually finding a homing pigeon group on Facebook. Don posted a photo, and the next day a man from Canton called, convinced it was his missing bird.

He drove to Mechanic Falls with a cage and food, hoping for a reunion.

The pigeon had other plans.

Instead of returning, it perched on top of the barn and refused to leave. The owner noticed the barn closely resembled the bird’s home loft, and with Don’s bird feeders attracting plenty of feathered visitors, the pigeon seemed to decide it had found a new home.

The owner left the cage and food behind, hoping the bird would eventually climb in?

Nah, it never did.

As of right now Friday, September 4th, the pigeon is still there, leaving during the day and returning every evening like it owns the place.

Homing pigeons are real by the way, and the American Racing Pigeon Union has clubs connected to Maine. These birds are bred for their remarkable ability to find their way home. Well, except this one.

However, we're going to follow along on this bird journey and check in to see how long this baby is going to perch at my in-laws.

Unfortunately, Don has already fallen in love.
