I Had a Seizure and It Changed Everything About How I View My Health
On the evening of May 5th, I had a seizure. I didn't know it then, but my girlfriend Michele noticed something was wrong.
Focal Seizure with Preserved Awareness
My seizure was something I didn't even realize was happening. It started with a warmth in my body starting at the neck and moving slowly down my body to the point where I had forehead sweat. It lasted for all of 3 or 4 minutes.
During that time, Michele told me that I had been saying random words that didn't go together. I said, "He...at the food....the boy," yet I have no recollection of it.
Off to Maine Medical Center
Michele called an ambulance, but I wanted none of it and was even angry about having to go in an ambulance, so I signed a waiver saying I didn't want to be transported. It didn't sit well with Michele, so I relented after they left and she took me to the ER at Maine Med. I had never gotten into an ER as quickly as I did when the staff was told I had a seizure.

Tests, tests, and more tests
Let me tell you want sucks when you have a hairy chest. Putting on sticky sensors all over the hair that rip it all out when it is taken off. Ouch!
I spent the night in the ER under observation, and they sent me home the next day.
The type of seizure I had was a focal seizure with preserved awareness. It means that this type of seizure occurs when abnormal electrical activity is localized to one area of the brain while the person remains conscious and aware of their surroundings. That was me, plus the word salad.
So for now, you won't hear me on your radio as often as you usually do while I recover. I feel fine most of the time, but my medications make me very tired, as well as the remnants of the seizure. I'm going to get through this because I am lucky enough to have the best woman in the world watching me like a hawk. I won't be getting away with anything while she's on watch.
