Red’s Dairy Freeze

Red’s Dairy Freeze in South Portland has been an area favorite for generations as they head into their 70th season. They adapted and overcame during the pandemic and over a decade ago suffered a fire. It’s the Red’s way to keep going and keep making their customers happy.

Even with snow still on the ground, they announced today, Monday, March 14th, that they are officially open from noon until 9 pm daily through the ice cream season. (Yes I’m giving ice cream its own season.) And while Red’s is legendary for their Nor’easters, shakes, and sundae’s there are other beloved ice cream shops opening before spring.

Beal’s Ice Cream

Beal’s has multiple locations around Cumberland County. One can be found on the corner of routes 25 and 237, another on Moulton Street in the Old Port, and on Veranda Street in Portland. Beal’s is famous for their old fashioned ice cream and you can be sure that they’ll have your favorite flavor on their massive list of offerings. They even have tasty Ice Cream Pizzas. Beal’s officially opened on March 9th from noon until 8 pm.

Gifford’s

Gifford’s is the ol’ reliable ice cream here in Maine. They can be found in Hannaford, Shaws, and are likely in that small ice cream stand. Check with your local shop for their opening dates but we know that several of Gifford’s family-own stands are opening this Friday, March 18th. Those stands are Bangor, Waterville, and Farmington with Skowhegan and Auburn dates to be announced soon.

Gifford’s is releasing five new flavors for 2022 as well so keep your eyes peeled for Blue Monstah Cookie, Cone-y Pretzel Swirl, Maine Black Fly, Banana Cream Pie, and Black Forest Cherry Fudge.

Fielder's Choice

It was announced last week that Fielder's Choice with their massive portions are back open 7-days a week!

After such a long winter seeing the days get longer and seeing all of these cherished ice cream stands open up is an absolute joy. Sunny and warm days just may be around the corner!
