Hawk Survives Head On Collision With Car Driven By Maine Woman
A hawk is alive and on the road to recovery after getting struck by a Maine woman's car.
I'm sure that Judy Harmon from Scarborough, Maine is still shaking her head in disbelief. Judy was on I-495 in Chelmsford, Massachusets when she hit a hawk. What she didn't know was that the bird was stuck in her grill.
How did this hawk survive stuck in the car driven by Judy Harmon from Maine?
That is one resilient bird. It was not easy getting that poor red-tailed hawk dislodged from the grill of Judy's Honda SUV. She told WMTW,
It is an incredible story, I mean, he lived! We saved his life! When I got out of the car, I looked at him and he turned his head looking at me, he wasn't squawking, his arms were flat out.
CBS News reported that Chelmsford State Police said they immediately contacted Massachusetts Environmental Police, Chelmsford Animal Control, and nearby dealership Nucar Honda of Westford, which sent over technicians. That's right. They had to remove part of the grill to get the poor bird out.
That poor hawk took a 20-minute ride on the way home to Maine
Judy was driving home from Connecticut when she hit the hawk on 495. She heard the hawk hit her car, but then didn't see anything and was hoping that somehow it was fine. Then she said, she saw something telling WMTW,
I saw his wing come up on the hood. I said 'oh my god, I think he must still be on the car'!
She called 911 and pulled into a rest stop. After taking off a layer of the grill, they freed that poor freaked-out hawk. The bird seemed to be good, but he was not quite ready for entrance to the free world. He had a small fracture in his wing and was kept for a few days to gain back strength. It took a lot to hang on to that grill!
Judy was bummed out that her three-month-old car had its grill destroyed, but so happy the hawk made it. That hawk owes it all to Judy for pulling over and calling for help!
