Thousands gathered on Saturday, April 5, 2025, in cities and towns across Maine to protest the Trump administration's policies.

According to the Portland Press Herald, there were around 1,200 protests and demonstrations across the country. The theme was "Hands Off!" The slashing, the tariffs, the deportations, the constant barrage of shaking up our country and rattling the cages across the globe got people out with signs. And some were wicked clever.

Mainers took to the streets in the thousands

Andy Wright, from Falmouth, came to Portland and it was their first protest they had ever been to. Andy told the Portland Press Herald,

I’m appalled at what’s going on, and I’ve never participated in a protest, and I can’t just sit on the couch. I’ve got to do something.

The crowd was a mix of those that have been to other protests, and those that made it a family affair. Dogs and children peppered the very behaved crowds throughout Maine including the largest protest in Maine in the largest city in Maine, Portland.

The Portland protest shut down Congress Street between Center and Temple streets as protesters flooded the road. There was even a guest speaker of Senator Angus King, who spoke for a good five minutes and got the crowd riled up.

Some of the signs were fantastic. Michael Eric Bérubé and Lucinda Kennedy took some incredible images and allowed me to share them with you. Some made me laugh out loud, and others I found so clever. Here are some of the best from Portland, Maine's 'Hands Off' 2025 protest.
