Macy's Department Stores have been on a spree, closing stores to make ends meet as they and many other businesses struggle to compete with online shopping. Since 2015, Macy's has closed 320 stores, cutting their number of stores by a third. Now Macy's has announced they will be closing another 65 stores by the end of 2025. Could Macy's at the Maine Mall be on the chopping block?

Macy's is in the space at the Maine Mall originally the home of Porteous. It started as a stand-alone store after the business moved from downtown Portland to the under-construction Maine Mall. It closed on New Year's Eve, 1994.

Jordan Marsh was purchased by Federated Department Stores, which renamed the northeast Jordan Marsh stores Macy's in April of 1996 and it has remained there for almost two decades.

Is the Maine Mall Macy's in Danger of Closing?

We don't have an answer for this, but some history does indicate that the Maine Mall Macy's may be safe. Through the eight years of Macy's downsizing, the Maine Mall location has been spared. It's the only Macy's in the state, so that might be the reason is hasn't landed on the chopping block.

The Maine Mall is also one of the few malls in Maine that is still doing well and not becoming a ghost of the 80s like the Auburn and Bangor Malls have become, so the odds seem to be in its favor to stay.

As of this writing, Macy's has not announced any of the new closures planned by the end of January 2025. We'll have to wait and see.
