Rescued Horses in Maine Need Hay and You Can Help
Sweet rescued horses eat a lot of hay, and it can get expensive. Can you help?
On River Road in Windham, Maine, there is a beautiful horse farm with big white barns near the Maine Correctional Center. It’s called the Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals, or MSSPA, and it's a horse shelter. This is where abused and neglected horses go to start healing and getting better.
Horses that land at MSSPA are often in very rough shape. Some come emaciated because they don't get enough to eat. The Windham Eagle pointed out that hay is fundamental to a horse’s ability to thrive. Just like food for us is essential. Bad hay, moldy hay, or no hay at all can cause serious medical and starvation challenges to a horse. And this is where you can help these sweet horses.

Buy-A-Bale of hay for the horses at the Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals
The annual Buy-A-Bale campaign at the MSSPA supports all the amazing work that happens at the farm year-round. Your support of the MSSPA's annual Buy-A-Bale campaign means new lives for these horses. Buy-A-Bale funds help to purchase hay, grain, and supplements for all the horses. A bale of hay can cost $7-$10, with a round bale costing between $70 and $90. With many mouths to feed, the MSSPA uses a LOT of hay!

All horses that come to the MSSPA are given fresh hay they can eat. Grain and supplements are added when the horse is ready. A gift to MSSPA’s Buy-A-Bale campaign contributes to the most fundamental building block for a horse’s recovery.
