Adorable Woodpecker Goes on Vandalism Spree in Massachusetts
Tiny little Rockport, Massachusetts, has an even tinier vandal damaging cars.
This quiet little town on gorgeous Cape Ann is also home to the pileated woodpecker. The sharply dressed bird has damaged more than 20 vehicles, according to residents. It caught the attention of NBC News and one resident who caught the vandal in the act.
"We seem to have a vandal in our neighborhood. I'm describing him as 18 to 24 inches tall, wearing black and white with a red hat," Favaloro said on NBC's "TODAY" show.

This bird, which is the size of a big crow, is breaking windshields and side mirrors! Janelle Favaloro caught the bird in action! She said the woodpecker is responsible for damaging at least 25 vehicles.

Janelle told The Today Show that she saw the woodpecker and could see it was seeing its reflection and figured it was the culprit!
The woodpecker showed up and landed on the windshield wipers of the RV in our yard and was looking at its reflection. And we were like, 'You know what, I bet he was the one that damaged the mirrors, as well.'
Why are woodpeckers vandalizing cars and not pecking trees in Rockport, Massachusetts?
NBC News says that Zoo Miami's communications director said that one of the reasons could be peak mating season. It's not just the pileated woodpeckers, but all birds are getting into very aggressive territorial courtship displays. So apparently, cracking a windshield is a turn-on in a woodpecker's world.
Here's hoping that the woodpeckers find a nice mate, go off and build a nice nest in a tree, and leave Janelle's car alone.
