The Portland Police Department is mourning the loss of retired K-9 Barni, a dog who spent years serving alongside officers and helping keep the community safe.

According to a post shared by the department on Facebook, Barni worked with retired Officer Michelle Cole during his time with Portland Police. Barni served as an explosives detection dog, a role that often involves searching buildings, vehicles, and public spaces to help ensure safety during events and daily operations.

Police officials say K-9 units play a critical role in law enforcement, and the partnership between handler and dog becomes especially strong over time. Through training, deployments, and everyday work, handlers and their K-9 partners develop a bond built on trust and teamwork.

The department noted that Barni’s service left a lasting impression on those who worked alongside him. Officers say dogs like Barni are not just working partners, but valued members of the department and the broader community.

Portland Police thanked Barni for his years of service and dedication, while also recognizing the special connection he shared with his handler.
