The Beehive Loop Trail in Acadia National Park is no secret to outdoor lovers, but over Memorial Day weekend, it felt more like a theme park line than a remote mountain hike.

Rung and Ladder Hike

The 1.4-mile loop, known for its steep iron rungs, granite steps, and sweeping ocean views, saw an overwhelming surge of hikers, turning this classic adventure into a crowded climb.

Often described as a “rung and ladder” hike, the Beehive is both thrilling and scenic, with an elevation gain of 450 feet and breathtaking views of Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, and the Gulf of Maine from the summit. It’s one of the park’s most iconic trails and busiest during peak season.

Swarm of People

This past Memorial Day weekend, the trail was packed to the brim. Videos circulating on social media, including a viral TikTok clip, captured the lines of people inching up the narrow cliffside, pausing not to admire the view, but to wait their turn on the iron rungs. With little room to pass and only one hiker able to move through certain areas at a time, progress was slow and often stalled entirely.

Popular But Challenging

While the trail is moderately challenging and popular for a reason, the crowds can turn it into more of an exercise in patience than a peaceful outdoor escape. Park officials advise starting the hike early in the morning or even before sunrise to beat the rush. For those seeking solitude and serenity, timing your visit wisely is key.
