Criminals Are Taking Advantage Of New Englanders With COVID-19 Text Scam

Scammers will try to take advantage of any situation, even one as serious as the global COVID-19 crisis. So, be leary of all text messages from people you don't know, even if they seem official. WMTW is reporting about a new scam involving text messages that say you have come into contact with a person who has the novel coronavirus.

This is a good reminder from police in Maine of how vulnerable we are, especially right now with all the misinformation about COVID-19. It is difficult to know what to believe. We are getting new thrown at us from left and right, and much of it is not reliable information.

The bottom line is: Don't trust a text message or a phone call from anyone you don't know, and definitely do not click on any links. Thomaston Police Department says it best in its Facebook post below.: "The virus is not the only invisible enemy. Be vigilant against all threats!"
