The giant Citgo sign in Boston's Kenmore Square has been looking over Fenway's Green Monster since 1940. Except for a sign change when Citgo debuted its new logo in 1965, the sign has been in that same spot. But that's about to change with an upcoming move, but don't panic. It isn't going far.

History of the Citgo Sign

The original sign was erected in 1940, and the logo used at the time was for City Service Company, which later became Citgo. You can see what the two signs looked like here. Its location in Kenmore Square had made it visible over the Green Monster in left field.

Moving the Citgo Sign

If you are going to move a sign that is 60 feet on every side, full of powerful LED lights, and has a heavy steel structure, you need professionals in the form of Citgo engineers who will move this massive landmark a mere 30 feet higher and about 120 feet behind where it is.

Why The Move?

Well, if you ask me, the photo above that I took when I was at Fenway Park in 2022 should show you why.

As the new owners of the Boston Red Sox began to make changes at Fenway, the Green Monster in left field got taller. Over the years, seats were added on top of the Monster, and then a pair of billboards advertising businesses like Draft Kings.

From where we were sitting, directly across from left field under the roof, you couldn't see all of the Citgo sign. All that was visible was the tri-mark, the red triangle that has become iconic since 1965.

The move should make the sign visible to the majority of people watching a game at Fenway. Let's hope so.
