Well here's something that is bound to have a strong opinion among Mainers.

According to WMTW, the director of the Baxter State Park Authority thinks Mount Katahdin, Maine's highest mountain, should drop the Mount from its name and simply be called Katahdin. Why the change? Well as it turns out, the name "Mount Katahdin" is redundant.

According to a listing in a 1905 book titled The Origin of Certain Place Names in the United StatesKatahdin is a native American word that means "highest land," "chief mountain," or "big mountain."

So calling it Mount Kathadin is kind of like calling it Mount Big Mountain.

In 1893, the US Board on Geographic Names designated the mountain's official name as "Mount Kathadin" and it's been that way for over 100 years. A lot of people already call it simply Kathadin, but signs and maps all list it as Mount Kathadin.

If the mountain was renamed to just Kathadin, there would be a substantial cost to make change to all those signs, so is it worth it?

Right now it's just an idea being kicked around, but what you do you think? Do you prefer the name stay as Mount Kathadin, or should it be shortened to just Kathadin? Let us know in the comments below of on our Facebook page.
