If you drive around this giant state of Maine, you are bound to find a few super funky mailboxes. Some are decorated in a theme, and some are just a creative way of getting a box up by the road to make sure they can get their mail.

Why do Mainers have some mailboxes that are like Fort Knox?
A 10-year-old article in the Sun Journal was all about the way some mailboxes in Maine are built in sturdy plastic and not flimsy metal. The staff writer Mark LaFlamme quipped,
Why these drastic measures for such a mundane item? Why, to make them vandal-proof, of course – the ageless pastime of mailbox-baseball is alive and well on Maine’s back roads. Have your mailbox obliterated by some punk with a Louisville Slugger once and you’ll likely forget about painting pretty pictures on the side of it. You want it sturdy and stable so you can get your mail. Who cares about how pretty your mailbox is, or how original.
Mainers can fix anything with duct tape and bungee cords
James Treadwell definitely noticed driving around this great big state, how funky some of the mailboxes are. He's got around 40 pictures of some crazy mailboxes. I've never had my mailbox hit by a vandal with a baseball bat, but I have lost one to the snowplow guy. The city replaced it with a nice one on a chain so that it could swing when hit. I was hoping the plow would hit my house.
