Get Excited Because It’s Coming! Maine’s Third Market Basket Just Broke Ground
They first came to Maine when opening a store in Biddeford. Now they are opening their third location in Topsham.
There's a Market Basket in Biddeford (opened in 2013) and one in Westbrook at Rock Row (opened in 2020). Back in December discussions started about a third Market Basket in Topsham Maine. Back in November 2021, the Press Herald had a story about the possibility of one opening and now WMTW reports that they have started building! Almost two years later!
A real estate developer, John Matthews, went before Topsham's planning board to build a Market Basket at the southern end of the Topsham Fair Mall. That's where Target and Home Depot live. But at the Topsham Fair Mall's northern entrance is a Hannaford. People always need groceries and even Hannaford has expanded in the Midcoast opening its second location in Brunswick at Cooks Corner.
Is it too much to have two grocery stores in the same mall area? The Press Herald reported that in a news release, John Matthews said,
This is just a fantastic location for a Market Basket. It will add a much-needed supermarket option to a well-established regional shopping destination at the convergence of high-capacity roadways. Market Basket has proven to be tremendously popular in Maine and they are very interested in the opportunity to further serve the residents of the state.
They are looking to build a Market Basket similar to the one at Rock Row in Westbrook. They haven't provided a time frame for when it will be completed, but they did provide a rendering of what it will look like!
It will be an 80,000-square-foot store. I think the Topsham area can support two grocery chains making them both successful.
