With Memorial Day Weekend having passed, it's now officially the summer season here in Maine. A major benefit to the season is the plethora of activities that great weather allows for, including a wealth of outdoor concerts.

One of these concerts will be put on by the famed Portland Symphony Orchestra. And the theme should be quite a popular one.

The Portland Symphony Orchestra will be hosting an event to celebrate girl power on June 11. The family-friendly concert will highlight the incredible women in music, and the impact they have had in history.

The performance will take place at the Seaside Pavilion in Old Orchard Beach. This is a very fitting location, especially in the summer. Tickets are a very accommodating $10, for what the PSO describes as a "Discovery Concert." The concept is to focus on families with young kids, who may be experiencing orchestral music for the first time.

The concert is a way for the PSO to show children, especially girls, that nothing is stopping them from creating an amazing path in music. Whether it's performance, writing, conducting, or a little bit of everything, the path is right there for any young child to take.

The PSO also announced that the guest conductor will be Erin Freeman. The highly acclaimed conductor's bio includes being the director of the Richmond Symphony Chorus, Director of Choral Activities at Virginia Commonwealth University, Artistic Director of Wintergreen Music, and Resident Conductor of the Richmond Ballet. I think it's safe to say that Erin is a perfect representative for this special concert.

What a wonderful idea and gesture by the Symphony. The PSO is doing what we all need to do more of by making music more inclusive. Erin and these wonderful musicians will be a shining example of the incredible future anyone can have in music.
