AI has officially entered the police force chat. And we don't know how to feel about it.

If you were thinking that Artificial Intelligence was just for ChatGPT, think again babes because the force is now using it. The police force that is.

According to the Kennebec Journal, Somerset County Deputies are now using an AI software to generate draft reports from body-cam audio.

All this makes me think of is the legendary film made back in 1987 called, Robo-Cop.

They tap a button to record the conversation and minutes later, AI types out the narrative for them. Officers say it helps save time, as per the Portland Press Herald.

AI Enters the Maine Police Force

But this isn’t all free efficiency.

Defense attorneys and civil liberties advocates are concerned and worried that AI-generated reports will lack the nuance that only a human can give it. AI flattens the human experience

You could say that AI flattens the human vibe, but they are growing smarter every day. Just the other day I asked my AI why it existed.

The answers it was giving me were not “robotic” they felt very human and that freaked me out a bit.

Saving time is good, especially when police departments are vital to our communities and we need them to focus on the important things, such as, saving our lives. They say this could save them 70-80% on time, as per the article.

But what if a mistake happens? A single mistake in this type of way, could mean the difference between justice and a major legal injustice.

That’s where this all gets scary.

And do you remember not too long ago at the Westbrook Police Department had to issue a public apology after an officer used ChatGPT to add a logo to a photo of seized drugs, and the app altered the evidence itself.

Let’s just say that AI inside of our police departments if still at it’s growing toddler phase. It could be a little too unpredictable.

As we as a state push ahead into the future, it’s important to remind ourselves that people lives are on the line and freedom is important. Our grandparents fought for it, remember?

So we should always be extra careful when embracing the future and using Artificial  (meaning not real) Intelligence. Especially in our police departments.
