Will the Closing of Six Flags America Affect Six Flags New England?
After more than 50 years of operation, Six Flags America is closing for good, and the reason is something we've seen in our area as well, just not on this scale.
Six Flags America Closed on Sunday, November 2
Six Flags America is located in Bowie, Maryland, and on November 2, with the closing of the gates, Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor water park were no more.
Also on the chopping block is California's Great America in Santa Clara, which will close after the 2027 season.
Why The Closure?
The president and CEO of Six Flags had this to say in a May 1 press release:
“As part of our comprehensive review of our park portfolio, we have determined that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plans.
"After reviewing a number of options, we believe that marketing the property for redevelopment will generate the highest value and return on investment.”
It's always the money from selling land for development that makes fun things go away.
There's Foghorn Leghorn saying goodbye to everyone before he hits the unemployment line.
Is Six Flags New England in Danger of Closing?
Six Flags New England is the nearest Six Flags park in the Northeast, and so far, it seems safe from closing. But you never know if one day the company decides to sell. If so, Funtown Splashtown is always a great option anyway.
The property that Six Flags America sits on is about 500 acres, which is about the size of 378 football fields. It's currently for sale if you want it, but that's just the land, and it's likely out of your price range.
