He never fails. Or she never fails? We'll never know because like Batman, the Portland Valentine Bandit takes great pains to keep their identity a mystery.

For the past 30 years, sometime in the dark hours of the morning on Valentine's day, the bandit covers downtown Portland with hearts. Most of them are just on simple 8 1/2 x 11 paper, but there's always one giant heart that shows up drapped over a building. This year it was the Casco Bay Ferry Terminal that got the honor.

If Santa Claus had a Valentine's Day counterpart in Portland, the bandit would be it. But is it one person? An army of people? Does the bandit have elves?

Can it be the same person (people?) behind this all these years. Maybe the Valentine Bandit is like the tooth fairy and Santa. Magic!
