If you drive in downtown Portland this holiday season, you'll notice that the city's Holiday Tree, or Christmas tree if you prefer to call it the traditional name, has a new type of light to it that gives the tree and entirely different appearance.

I noticed the strange lights on the tree when I was walking past it in Monument Square last week before it was lit. A close up look showed that they were sticks about a foot or two long with LEDs.

I wasn't quite sure what these were supposed to be. Icicles? Candles? It wasn't until the tree was lit that I saw what they were doing and I'm not sure how I feel about it.

This is the first time the tree has had blinking lights and these seem very weird to me. It looks like the tree is melting to me.

You've probably called me old fashioned by now, and you'd be right. I've always liked lights that don't twinkle, blink or whatever this is doing. Seriously though. What's that supposed to be?
