Who needs Ty Pennington when you have an army of volunteers.

A Soldier's Journey Home is a 100% volunteer organization based out of Tennesee. It is made up of mostly active and retired firefighters and veterans from 15 states, including Maine. They have volunteers from around the country here to build a mortgage-free smart home for Christy, a double amputee who was injured while serving as part of a peacekeeping mission in Asia in 2006.

Army Sergeant Christy Gardner was a military police officer. In 2006 while on a peacekeeping mission in Asia, she was severely injured during a foot patrol. It was a very negative prognosis. Doctors told her she would never be able to bathe herself, walk, ride a bike or swim. She was labeled 100% disabled - she set out to prove them all wrong. Which she has done. She is the 2021 recipient of the Soldier's Journey Home house.

From June 7 - June 19th, the home will be built. Completely. There is no one more deserving of this home than Christy. Christy is dedicated to improving the quality of life for others. She fosters and trains dogs to be therapy and service animals with the goal of having her own training program. She has even written a book for kids, 'Lucky: Little Guy, BIG Mission'. It's written with Eileen Doyon and is about diversity and how someone with a disability can overcome obstacles. Money from the book goes to helping train more puppies as therapy and service dogs.
