As winter fast approaches, people throughout Maine begin to make their plans for winter activities. Some prefer to stay inside, keep warm, and hibernate. Others prefer to take advantage of all the winter recreation Maine offers when it comes to skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling. Of course, there's also ice skating, and if that's an activity you love to do outdoors, there's an enormous 17,000 square foot outdoor rink waiting for you.

Shared on Facebook by Sugarloaf Mountain, their huge rink is located at the Outdoor Center on the property. If you're a hockey fan, step onto the rink and behold what an NHL regulation-sized rink feels like. It's not just for show, either, as Sugarloaf hosts pick-up hockey games on Tuesday and Thursday nights throughout the winter season.

If hockey isn't your game, there's plenty of relaxing skate sessions to be had, too. The rink is open every day (weather conditions permitting) from 9am until 5pm. Every Saturday during the winter season, family skate sessions take place from 5-8pm for an even more relaxed setting.

If you head to Sugarloaf unequipped for ice skating, no worries. The Outdoor Center features a full line of skate rentals for both adults and children. If you do come equipped with your own skates but need a sharpening, you'll find that service available at the Outdoor Center as well.

Sugarloaf's outdoor rink is set to open in mid-December and run until mid-March.
