After the announcement earlier this week that Olympia Sports was being sold, people have been wondering how many stores in Maine will remain open. Some Olympia employees are saying all but four.

Olympia Sports was founded in Maine and with the flagship store at the Maine Mall opening in 1975. Over the years, it grew to over 100 stores throughout New England and a few other nearby states.

According to WGME 13, an Olympia Sports assistant manager said all stores in Maine will close except for the original Maine Mall store as well as stores in Auburn, Waterville and Falmouth.

If that's true, then stores in Windham, Freeport, Biddeford, Wells, South Paris, Farmington, Belfast, Rockland, Bangor, Ellsworth will all close their doors. Olympia's new owner, JackRabbit, has not yet made an official announcement as to which stores will close.

It's sad news for customers and employees alike as many small towns who relied on Olympia for athletic goods and employment will have to look elsewhere.

Closings are expected to be completed by the end of January.
