It's time to learn about public transportation in Boston.

As of midnight on July 5, the Sumner Tunnel, a main artery into Boston, is closed and won't be reopening until late August. The Boston Globe reports that the almost 90-year-old bridge needs some tender loving care. This will make the already nightmarish traffic in Boston worse, a lot worse.

Wait. How long is the Sumner Tunnel closed?

The tunnel is 'scheduled' to reopen again by midnight on August 31, according to an article in the Boston Globe. But, it's not done after that. The tunnel will still be closed on weekends starting Fridays at 11 p.m. to Mondays at 5 a.m. right into November.

How do I get to Logan Airport to catch my flight?!

Massport CEO Lisa Wieland said travelers should avoid driving to or from Logan International Airport when possible. Great. Then what do you do? They are saying to use public transportation or private shuttle services. Here are some of the things that are being offered to help. Because your second cousin is still going to insist you pick them up at Logan for the summer reunion. According to the Boston Globe reporting on MassDOT,

  • In addition to free Blue Line service, the MBTA will add an extra bus to the Silver Line 1 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., which remains free to commuters leaving the airport.
  • Tickets for the Logan Express shuttle — running between the airport and stops in Back Bay, Braintree, Framingham, Peabody, and Woburn — will be cut 25% online and tickets for anyone under 17 will be free when traveling with their families.
  • The Winthrop Ferry — with stops in Winthrop, Quincy, downtown Boston, and at the airport — will offer $2.40 fares, and travelers who arrive at the airport by water will be allowed to skip to the front of the security line.

You can get live traffic information and help with an alternate route with Mass511.

You're gonna need a giant dose of patience and planning and well, a little luck wouldn't hurt.
