Community Leader Celebrates The Switch-on Of Windham’s Traffic Lights
I live in Windham and drive through the intersection of Route 302 and Albion Road every day. On September 11, 2025, the traffic light at this intersection was activated, and something else was corrected. Or was it?
Road Sign - Traffic Light Ahead
On August 30, I went my usual way home and noticed that the sign indicating a traffic light was ahead was odd.
New traffic lights had been installed at Route 302 and Albion Road and were flashing yellow or red, depending on which way you were travelling. The lights were up and working, but not ready to have the switch flipped.
I noticed the sign above had been installed that day, but it was upside down. Red should be on top.
Lights Activated
On September 11, the lights were activated by Maine Senator Tim Nangle in a small ceremony. Here's what he had to say:
Big news for everyone who travels through this busy intersection: the new traffic signal at Route 302/Roosevelt Trail and Albion Road is officially up and running!
I had the privilege of being there with MaineDOT to flip the switch and turn the lights on. This project has been a longtime request from folks in the area, and I’m thrilled to see it finally in place.
Projects like this are a great reminder of how crucial local feedback is in shaping safer roads for all of us.
That same day, I noticed the signs were corrected. Turns out, they had been installed upside down in all directions.
Why did this happen? My only guess is they were installed upside down because the traffic lights weren't active at the time, and when they did become active, workers turned the signs to basically say, "We're not kidding. The traffic light is active now."
I'm no investigative reporter, but this seems likely to me.
