What’s The Hold-up With Those Traffic Lights In Windham?

New traffic lights at the intersection of Roosevelt Trail and Albion Road have been installed, yet they're still covered in black plastic and not functional. What's going on here?

This intersection has a history of being dangerous due to its blind spots and high-speed traffic, with many people driving faster than the posted 45 mph speed limit. Too many accidents have happened in this area:

• February 3, 2022 - Two drivers were hospitalized after a head-on collision between Pope and Alibion Roads
• August 2, 2022 - Speeding and alcohol were the cause of a three-car accident, injuring four people.
• November 2, 2022 - A school bus and a car collided near Albion Road and Route 302. There were children on the bus at the time, but no one was injured.
• May 12, 2025 - A road rage incident caused an accident near Albion Road and Route 302
• July 17, 2025 - A car flipped onto its roof at the intersection, with another vehicle on the curb.
• August 5, 2025 - A two-car accident occurred at the intersection. No other information was available.

Those are just a handful of the most significant accidents in the past 3 years. Many minor accidents have happened here as well.

When Do The Lights Get Turned On?

The Town of Windahm has been getting a lot of questions, especially after several accidents recently, asking why the lights are installed but aren't working? So they responded on their Facebook page:

The signals are awaiting the necessary equipment to make them operational. The Maine DOT's contractor on the Alibion/Rte. 302 traffic signals proejct is awaiting computer and communications equpiment needed to run the signals. Signals should be operational by early September.

Regardless of whether the signals are operational or not, approach this busy intersection with caution. When the signals are turned on, I'm guessing it's going to take some people by surprise, so make sure you are driving defensively to avoid an accident.
