Are There Really Tunnels Beneath Portland Maine’s Old Port?
007emty posted a video on Instagram telling the story of hidden tunnels beneath the roads in Portland's Old Port, but he is wrong for one simple reason.
Truth of Myth?
Instagram user 007emty shoots videos while riding his motorcycle around Maine and tells interesting stories and observations along the way.
One of those stories he told a few months back is that there are hidden tunnels under all the streets in Portland's Old Port. "He starts by saying this is something even the people of Maine aren't going to know about." Well, there's a reason Mainers don't, but that's coming soon.
He claims there is an entire labyrinth of tunnels under the roads, and some of the walls still have shackles for prisoners on them. He goes on to tell the story of how people in those tunnels were captured and put on ships as slaves.
Are There Really Tunnels Beneath Portland's Old Port?
I did some research because this didn't make sense to me.
According to the Maine Historical Society Blog, the Portland, Maine, tunnels are a myth. What the Instagram user refers to took place in Portland, Oregon. Not in Portland, Maine.
An entry on Wikipedia even goes so far as to say that Portland, Oregon, historians have confirmed that tunnels exist, but there is no evidence that they were used as described in the Instagram video.
