Maine Has a Women’s Football Team, Let’s Show Up For Them
The Maine Mayhem Women's Football team are jumping into their 2026 season with something they’ve never lacked: incredible players.
What this next season needs isn’t more strong, powerful, talented athletes, it’s more visibility. More people cheering in the stands, more tickets bought, and more eyes on a team that is pioneering women’s sports in Maine and making history.
I recently got the chance to interview Shea Cusick, Fundraising and Marketing for the team and she shared that they compete in the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA), which is the largest and most competitive women’s tackle football league in the entire world.
Women’s tackle football has existed for 40 years, but the last five years have brought the most growth the league has ever seen.
Why This Season Feels Different
Shea told me that the Mayhem are growing right along with it, moving from Division 3 to Division 2 and wanting to become a pro-level franchise which would be the only one of it’s kind in the Northeast.
The roster feels empowering and sort of symbolic with players ranging from 18-50 years old, including women like Ruth Murphy who was part of Maine’s very first women’s football league.
It gives A League of Their Own vibes but not because these women are filling in for their husbands off at war, but because they continue to play in a world that still doesn’t fully see them.
And now, even in 2026, that gap feels louder.
New women sports media platforms are growing and proving that when women control the mic, fans will connect. Yet women’s football remains largely invisible on the airwaves and in television news media.
Men’s sports dominate coverage. But there’s enough room for all on the playground of sports media coverage.

At the Mayhem's 2026 signing ceremony, where I had the honor of emceeing, the energy was unmistakable. These women weren’t trying to break any barriers or make history, they just want to play football.
That’s the beauty of the Maine Mayhem, and why this season deserves a bigger crowd. If you want to help, share this team, donate! If you’re a Maine business reach out and ask for their sponsorship sheet.
Be proud to support a team that is filled with women who have supported you.
