Remember When Calling Maine Radio Stations Was the Ultimate Flex?
You know how certain things from high school instantly transport you back?
For Meagan Marcoux, (now Meagan Kennison) and I, it wasn’t painting our nails, it wasn’t yearbook club, it was… getting on the radio.
And back then, being featured on the radio was the most ultimate flex. I mean, it still is but we didn’t have TikTok when we were in high school. And thank God for that. So, if you made it on 94.9 HOM, you were basically famous.
Naturally, Meagan and I came up with a really great plan, we would sing the stations famous jingle. Yes, the one you still have stuck in your head to this day. Sandra and Teddy were the Morning Show Hosts at that time.
I can remember it like it was yesterday, we were sitting there in her bedroom in our jammies. We probably had just split a jar of pickles and Mountain Dew.
How a Jar of Pickles, a Landline, and the 94.9 HOM Jingle Made Us Feel Like Stars
We decided to not just sing the jingle, but “sinnng” the jingle, like professionally. I don’t want to boast, but Meagan and I are pretty much like Adele and Celine. So we wanted to perform the song, we practiced the harmonies and we were ready to go.
We called and they answered! We were giggling and pleading “can we sing your jingle for you?” We didn’t know this back then, but a call like this, is gold.
And not only did they let us sing it for them, they recorded it, and they played it back. On. The. Air. More than once. For us, it was like performing at Madison Square Garden to a sold out audience.
And listen guys, I don’t know where the recording lives at the moment, it’s got to be buried in a dusty archive next to a Britney CD.
As we are both now in our early 40s, looking back, it’s so adorable because that was our form of rebellion.
Other kids were sneaking beer from their parents and having joyrides and we were singing radio station call letters.
What did you used to do with your best friends, “back in the day” in Maine? What was your form of rebellion?
