There are some incredible women behind businesses in Maine, doing some amazing work.
The most impressive women-owned business is also the oldest - Hancock Lumber. Originally founded in 1848, it is owned by Abby, Alison, Carol, and Sydney Hancock. According to Mainebiz, 64% of Hancock Lumber is owned by the women just mentioned.
Women own all sorts of businesses in Maine
In looking at Mainebiz's data, I have to admit that I hadn't heard of most of these businesses. Such a wide variety of professions too. From the above-mentioned Hancock Lumber to Dean and Allyn Inc. This is a family-owned professional fire protection sprinkler contractor. Peggy Stewart, Marissa Stewart, and Katherin Steward own 65% of this Gray, Maine business.

Dean and Allyn is 30 years old this year. Super impressive! They may not be huge businesses, but they are important. The largest women-owned business is Hancock Lumber with 16 offices in Maine and a total of 690 employees. The smallest of the top ten is Dean and Allyn, Inc. with just one office in Gray and 34 total employees.
Women-owned businesses in Maine are just like men-owned
It's not like you are going to think after working with a business owned by a woman,
Wow. That is obviously run by a woman.
I've worked with Rinck Advertising (#11) for years and had no idea that Laura Rinck was the owner. But I will say that knowing a woman is rocking this business, and dozens of others in Maine does make me puff with pride.
