The Pros and Cons of Living in Maine’s Rural Areas

I recently had someone living the big city life in New York ask me about the pros and cons of living the quiet life in Maine, as they are considering moving their family up here.

Living in Maine's rural areas can be a dream for some and a challenge for others, depending on what you're looking for in life. If you're into wide-open spaces, natural beauty, and a slower pace, rural Maine might just be your jam. But, like anything, it comes with its set of pros and cons.

Pros:

1. Nature Galore: Maine’s rural areas are perfect for nature lovers. You’re surrounded by forests, lakes, and mountains, making outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, and skiing super accessible. Not to mention, the peace and quiet that goes along with it.
2. Affordable Living: Compared to urban areas, housing in rural Maine is generally more affordable. You can often get more land and a larger home for your money, making it great for families or anyone looking to escape the high cost of city living.
3. Tight-Knit Communities: Small-town living means you’re likely to know your neighbors well, forming a strong sense of community. People in these areas often look out for each other, and there's a genuine small-town vibe.

Cons:

1. Limited Amenities: One of the downsides is that you might have to drive a bit for essentials. Grocery stores, medical facilities, and entertainment options can be far away, making quick trips a thing of the past. The more rural you get, the more difficult it becomes to access these essentials.
2. Slow Internet: If you’re someone who relies on high-speed internet for work or play, rural Maine might test your patience. Many areas still struggle with reliable and fast internet connections, which can be frustrating.
3. Winter: Maine winters are no joke, and rural areas can get hit hard. Snowy, icy roads and potential power outages can make winter months challenging, especially if you're not a fan of the cold. More rural areas can see power outages last longer as well.
