Quiet Kitty in Maine Losing Hope After Waiting 15 Months for Adoption
There's a handful of harsh realities that pets face when they find themselves in a Maine shelter. The most obvious reality is that they'll be confined to a smaller space a lot of the time. The attention they receive will be limited because there is only so much to go around.
But perhaps the cruelest is that many pets will watch as person after person walks by them and never considers bringing them home.
Shared on Facebook by Responsible Pet Care of Oxford Hills, that last reality has been staring a sweet and quiet cat named Shakira in the face for the last 15 months. She's watched as people have filtered into the shelter, only to choose another cat as their forever member of the family.
Shakira has spent the most time of any cat at the Responsible Pet Care of Oxford Hills shelter. It doesn't make much sense to those that work there because Shakira is a calm kitty with a loving demeanor. She is nine years old, but likely has many years left to enjoy life as a companion.
In their Facebook post, Responsible Pet Care of Oxford Hills mentioned that the staff at the shelter have noticed that the months of rejection have taken a toll on Shakira. Even pets who get passed by lose hope that they'll be the chosen one.
One glimmer of hope is that the shelter made an update to their initial post with a potential adopter in the works. Let's hope Shakira finds that forever home. It's also a reminder that if you're thinking about adding a fur member to your family, think responsible adoption first.
