New Nepali Restaurant Planned for Former Taco Trio Space in South Portland
South Portland’s restaurant scene is about to get a flavorful new addition. Himalayas on the Bay is currently under development at 60 Ocean Street in Knightville, taking over the space formerly occupied by Taco Trio.
A Longtime Dream Comes to Life
Owners Sachet Timilsina, Pushpa Regmi, and Dipesh Karki are aiming to introduce more Nepali and Tibetan cuisine to the Greater Portland area.
The restaurant’s culinary team, led by chefs Raj Kumar Karki and Laxman Neupane, plans to serve traditional dishes including momo, thali, thukpa, and chow mein. Diners will also find some familiar Indian favorites from the menu at the restaurant’s sister establishment, Hi Bombay in Portland.
A New Gathering Place for Knightville
Renovations are currently underway in the 6,006-square-foot space, with the team hoping to welcome guests by mid-July. Once complete, Himalayas on the Bay is expected to seat approximately 80 people between its dining room, bar area, and outdoor seating.
The owners see Knightville in South Portland as an ideal location thanks to its walkable neighborhood feel and growing residential community. Their goal is to create a welcoming spot where locals can gather while experiencing the rich flavors and traditions of Nepal and Tibet.
With construction moving forward, this is definitely one opening I’ll be keeping an eye on this summer.
