Here in Maine, we frequently talk about how much snow we got on a given day.  Normally, we don't talk all that much about the amount of rain we received.  However, sometimes we get so much rain that it makes sense to have that conversation.

Monday, October 20th, was one of those days.

While the day started out dry, we started seeing rain showers by late morning.  The rain continued throughout the day and into the night.

Here in Augusta, it poured for what seemed like hours.

According to an article on the WMTW website, some of the higher rainfall totals include:

  • Augusta/Hallowell - 0.60"
  • Belgrade - 1.60"
  • Bethel - 2.69"
  • Bridgton - 2"
  • Camden - 0.76"
  • Farmingdale - 0.50"
  • Farmington - 1.42"
  • Limerick - 1.61"
  • Limington - 2.50"
  • Naples - 2.27"
  • Manchester - 0.86"
  • New Gloucester - 1.64"
  • Otisfield - 2.69"
  • Rangeley - 4"

It is important to remember how much an inch of rain would equate to if it were snow.  While the amounts do vary, most scientists say that an inch of rain equals about 10 inches of snow!

So, the 4 inches of rain that Rangeley got would be equal to over THREE FEET of snow!

Of course, as the article states, we really needed the rain.  We have been dealing with widespread drought conditions for months.  As of mid-October, about 75% of the state was experiencing severe drought conditions.
