Zippia, the career experts, decided to figure out the grossest states. Maine is super NOT gross.

Oh, sure we have some gross stuff? Ever been up on Munjoy Hill on a hot summer day when the water treatment tanks are stinking big time? Even with water treatment plants and the working wharf on a hot summer day (FISH!) Maine was way on the bottom for gross states. Before we get into who did make the top gross states, we have to figure out what Zippia used to gauge grossness.

What determines grossness?

They started with what they labeled as 'undisputed metrics of gross-ery'.

  • Dirty air
  • Trash, or the percentage of each state that is landfill
  • Spread of illness like the flu

What are the grossest states?

Based on those indicators, here are your top 10 Grossest States:

  • Virginia
  • South Carolina
  • North Carolina
  • Pennsylvania
  • Texas
  • New Jersey
  • Connecticut
  • Georgia
  • Delaware
  • New York
Zippia.com

Zippia is hysterical about how they get to these conclusions. For dirty air, they looked at Air Filters Delivered. Yes, that's a website that ranked all the states on how clean their air is. Then they used the Environmental Protection Agency's percentage of each state's land that is landfill. Then the CDC rounded out this very official ranking with the spread of illness in each state. Ya know through gross sneezing or coughing. Then for good measure, they added some cultural factors. Like gross Google searches. What are gross Google searches? Mayo recipes and Croc wearing!

What state is with Maine for the least grossest?

The least grossest states are:

  • Maine
  • Idaho
  • Nebraska
  • Montana
  • Alaska

There ya have it. Next time someone says, 'Maine is gross,' tell them to suck it.

LOOK: Here are the 50 best beach towns in America

Every beach town has its share of pluses and minuses, which got us thinking about what makes a beach town the best one to live in. To find out, Stacker consulted data from WalletHub, released June 17, 2020, that compares U.S. beach towns. Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life. The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. From those rankings, we selected the top 50. Readers who live in California and Florida will be unsurprised to learn that many of towns featured here are in one of those two states.

Stacker used data from the 2020 County Health Rankings to rank every state's average life expectancy from lowest to highest. The 2020 County Health Rankings values were calculated using mortality counts from the 2016-2018 National Center for Health Statistics. The U.S. Census 2019 American Community Survey and America's Health Rankings Senior Report 2019 data were also used to provide demographics on the senior population of each state and the state's rank on senior health care, respectively.
