There's never been an elected President of the United States who was born in Maine. However, there was a vice-president from Maine, and the house where he was born is still standing today.

Hannibal Hamlin was the vice president of the United States under Abraham Lincoln during Lincoln's first term. His second term did not last long, ending with his assassination by John Wilkes Booth just months after his second term began.

Hamiln was born on what locals now call Paris Hill. At the time of his birth, the home was in Paris, Massachusetts, until Maine became a state.

Hannibal Hamlin's Birth Home

Having grown up in South Paris, I'm very familiar with the village of Paris Hill. There are a lot of homes that have been there for centuries, including Hannibal Hamlin's birth home. Even the former Paris jail, a small building made out of stone, still stands today and has been converted into a town library.

The view from behind the Hannibal Hamlin house slopes down the hill, giving residents a beautiful view of South Paris.
