Closing Time: Popular Portland Soup Shop Sadly Shutting Its Doors for Good
A big loss will be felt in downtown Portland as a popular eatery has announced it's closing for good.
Kamasouptra Closing
Kamasouptra announced the closure this week on social media, bringing an end to a tremendous run. The soup shop had been open since 2010, and was a true fixture in the food-filled Portland Market House building in Monument Square.
The four owners of the establishment sited "new adventures" as the main reason for closing. As the post says, a few of the owners have already left the area and have started other projects. The others will continue to run other well-known establishments, most notably the very popular and iconic Fat Boy Drive-In in Brunswick.
Soup Dreams
It was a meteoric rise for the sultans of soup. Along with the Portland Market House location, Kamasouptra had a run in the Maine Mall, as well as Freeport. You could also find many of the soups at various restaurants across Southern Maine, including numerous Portland Pie locations. It was also normal to see them at many area festivals, dishing out samples of their incredible fare.
Kamasouptra wasn't just a standard bowl of soup. It was much more than that. It was fresh, homemade, and always warm and delicious. They also were an excellent way to have a delicious vegetarian or vegan meal. I must say, the White Bean and Kale Soup was a regular in my diet for quite a long period. Plus, the homemade rolls were to die for. Perhaps a little hyperbolic. But, if you had one, you know what I'm talking about.
Portland Market House Future
The post also mentions Yardie Ting, the delicious Jamaican restaurant already in the Portland Market House, that will be taking over the space. No word if they will be utilizing both spaces or moving out of their current digs. Either way, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the restaurant.
As for the former soup studs, thanks for the wonderful food over the past decade and change. It was a wonderful run of sweet smelling aromas and tasty food. Best of luck to all of them in their future endeavors.
